You Can’t Eat Away Depression, Because Depression Eats You Away

Remember that point once we loved quoting the phrase ‘You’re what you eat’ without realizing the privilege that comes attached with such words?

Turns out that while many folks are actively trying to unlearn baseless generalizations, there are popular celebrities who don’t even consider before asserting their views about sensitive topics like psychological state .

As a guest during a morning show, Urwa Hocane said that the sole reason for having depression is that the food one eats. She also took a dismissive tone about depression and said that there are many problems and other people keep saying they need got depression or mental ‘disease’, while it’s all due to the food and no other reason.

Her sister, Mawra Hocane, who was also a guest at the show, agreed with Urwa, saying “it is what you set in your body.”

When the sister-duo was called out on social media, Mawra, rather than understanding why it had been inappropriate to mention that went on to justify her words by posting screenshots from a Google search to prove that inclusion of certain quite items in one’s diet are ‘likely’ to cause anxiety and depression. The word ‘likely’ is vital here because nowhere does it say that it’s the only cause, as said by the actors.
Now let’s just take a glance at how uninformed their opinion is. Yes, improving diet can help people that are browsing depression or anxiety but it’s not as simple because it sounds.

Firstly, people opening up about their psychological state may be a step within the right direction and being dismissive about this approach shows that it’ll take some longer for a few celebrities to know the nuances of psychological state . during a country where psychological state isn’t even considered important, it’s highly irresponsible to require depression so lightly.

Not goodbye ago, Aftab Iqbal, a well-liked TV host had made a mockery of psychological state issues by showing a 31-year old woman having ‘hysteria’ because she wasn’t married. Such statements aren’t just derogatory and misogynist rather they’re also dangerous because these people have tons of following, and that they have a platform to make sure that folks start breaking taboos rather than holding onto them. Yet, what we frequently see is people either passing uninformed opinions or making fun of the difficulty itself.

According to Dr Haroon Ahmed of Pakistan Association of psychological state , over 34 per cent of Pakistan’s population was estimated to be affected by mental illnesses with majority of the people unable to access treatment due to the stigma.

Mawra or other celebrities, got to understand that during a country which features a large segment of its population trying to survive by getting food twice each day , posting Google searches about consuming meat, pastries, refines cereals looks like a cruel joke. people that are born in households struggling to survive are exposed to many psychological state issues at a young age and limited or no access to treatment doesn’t help them either.

Even if there are people that can afford to eat this stuff , depression and anxiety don’t bid adieu if you remove these things from the diet. In fact, there are numerous people that don’t consume them or workout and yet are unable to recover because psychological state isn’t as simple as ABC.

Depression is far complicated
While there are people that would still undermine psychological state , there are many that discuss their journey to combat depression.

Singer Momina Mustehsan, actor Noman Javaid and Juggan Kazim have spoken up about their experiences on how it can affect self-esteem which it’s not a phase rather it’s much complicated.
Speaking about his struggles, Haider*, a writer by profession, says that he too had many misconceptions about depression.

“We know that it’s not just sadness or being low rather it’s an entire process. One psychologist told me to exercise, and that i joined MMA, and that i did feel better. That said, it’s extremely important to know that the approach to deal with depression varies from one person to a different , and that we cannot see depression in isolation. What worked on behalf of me won’t work for somebody else,” he says.

Haider further opines that handling depression requires a multi-pronged approach. “One can’t rely solely on exercise or dietary changes or maybe therapy too,” he adds.

“I feel people that don’t have depression can never understand what depression seems like . While i’ll not judge someone’s sincerity, I do think people that don’t have psychological state issues shouldn’t pull the leg of these who mention depression or anxiety because such attitude is detrimental and pushes them into reclusiveness. If you can’t know it , please don’t underestimate it,” he says.

Nasreen, who may be a stay-at-home mother shared that it took her a short time to know psychological state issues despite facing them for an extended time. As someone who regularly watches morning shows, she felt that albeit many shows are discussing psychological state , not many are equipped to use the proper language.

“I think people do search to celebrities and obtain suffering from their words. People will never share that they are going to ascertain a doctor or take medicine because they’re going to be labeled as not normal which ultimately results in isolation. Saying that changing diet can pull one out of depression is simply like saying that praying five times each day can cure your psychological state . Now, while meditation can work for a few , for others it might be extremely difficult to even consider it,” she said.

If only it were that easy to combat depression by ditching some items and choosing others, life would are easier but actually, it’s depression which eats, nay gnaws you away and it’s never the opposite way around.
